Polish health care system is based on the model of the health insurance. The health insurance is necessary to obtain medical services free of charge.
The health care is provided by NarodowyFunduszZdrowia (NFZ; eng. Polish National Health Fund). If you work legally and have the insurance, the majority of the medical services and appointments at the doctors is covered by that fund. The patients only cover a partial or total cost of the medicines, but they do not pay for the appointments, diagnostic tests, or any operations.
It should be noted that the fund does not cover the costs of hiring translators for patients. Hence, it is advisable to look for a doctor with whom you will be able to communicate without problems. Eventually, you can ask a Polish friend for help or seek the assistance of some non-governmental organisation that supports migrants.
When you go to the doctor, you should take with you all former diagnostic tests and medical documentation if you have any (even if the documentation is not written in Polish).

If you want to go to the specialist, you need a referral – it can be obtained at the family doctor (general practitioner). The referral is not required if you want to go to the gynaecologist or obstetrician, oncologist, dermatologist, venereologist, oculist or psychiatrist.
